Description
This painting by American artist Peter Gumaer Ogden, 1957- , is based upon a hand carved antique ivory Japanese netsuke created by an unknown Japanese artisan circa 1865 during the Edo-Meiji period. This traditional Japanese design is known as The Thirteen Masks and features, among others, masks of a Japanese woman, a Japanese fox like creature and several Japanese warriors, Samurai of warlords.
A netsuke 根付 or netsɯ̥ke is a very small sculpture of a Japanese handicraft tradition which began in 17th century Japan. In the beginning netsukes were plain carved button fasteners attached to the cords of an inro box usually worn about the waist. Over time netsuke art evolved into highly decorative, often elaborate sculpted art objects.
