The Gumaer / Guimar family of Orange County, New York. An aristocratic colonial American family traceable to the medieval capital of Portugal; Guimaraes. It is possible that, as a consequence of the Inquisition, the Guimars were, in earlier times, "New Christians" [Jewish converts]. By the late 17th century the Guimars had left a declining Portugal for the more promising shores of France, quite likely to settle in the village of Moeze near the western shore of France, a few miles south of LaRochelle and a short sea voyage from Guimaraes, Portugal.
