This is a restored copy of The Harp of Erin, an 1867 oil on canvas by American Victorian painter Thomas Buchanan Read, 1822-1872.
This painting depicts Erin, or Eriu, the ancient mythological matron goddess of Ireland chained to a rock in the midst of a stormy sea as she plays the ancient Irish - Celtic harp; all symbolizing the tumultuous history of Ireland. The Irish - Celtic harp is an Irish tradition dating back more than 1000 years.
