This is a restored copy of A Shoshone Indian Smoking, a circa 1860 pen and watercolor by American painter Alfred Jacob Miller, 1810-1874.
Alfred Jacob Miller was an American artist best known for his paintings of trappers and Native Americans in the fur trade of the western United States. He also painted numerous portraits and genre paintings in and around Baltimore during the mid-nineteenth century.
The Shoshone or Shoshoni are a Native American tribe with four large cultural/linguistic divisions: • Eastern Shoshone: Wyoming • Northern Shoshone: southern Idaho • Western Shoshone: Nevada, northern Utah • Goshute: western Utah, eastern Nevada.
