Description
This is a digitally restored reproduction of an 1887 cabinet card photograph by Cheyenne, Wyoming photographer C.D. Kirkland. Handwritten description in white at the bottom reads: "last Black Hills Coach Leaving Cheyenne Feb. 19th '87".
During the final years of the Wild West Wyoming Territory this was a prominent social venue in Cheyenne. The Inter Ocean Hotel was built by African American restauranteur, Barney L. Ford.
The Inter Ocean was the first American hotel in Thomas Edison's U.S. early electrical lighting technology history to have electric lighting.
When it first opened in 1876 the Inter Ocean hosted U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant. The Inter Ocean Hotel was the embarkation point for the Cheyenne - Deadwood South Dakota Stage Coach Line.
In 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt stayed for three nights at the Inter Ocean Hotel.
After forty one years as a thriving hotel the Inter Ocean was destroyed by fire in 1916 and never rebuilt.
The Fine Art America logo does not appear on the final product.
