Description
This is a restored copy of Char d' Apollon or Apollo's Chariot, a circa 1908 pastel on paper by famed French symbolist painter Odilon Redon, 1840-1916. Redon is known for his fantastic abstract surrealist paintings often inspired by Japanese art. In 1903 Redon was awarded the Legion of Honor. His paintings can be found in the Getty Museum and the Musée d'Orsay He was a native of Bordeaux, Aquitaine.
In ancient Greco-Roman times Apollo was perhaps the most famous Greek god; he was a healer, an archer, a maker of music and dance, and an oracle to be consulted at Delphi. He was also a sun god, the son of Zeus and Leto. In this painting Apollo is depicted in his horse drawn chariot flying across the sky in a time when the modern day concept of "UFO"s was unknown.
