Artist's Description

This is a reproduction of a 1769 Egyptian Revival print by the famous Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi [1720-1778]. This fascinating architectural display includes elements and iconography of ancient Egyptology including Bast or Bastet the cat goddess, Khonsu the hawk and Apis the bull deity. Other classic ancient Egyptian motifs pictured include a grasshopper or locust, a Nile River crocodile, Egyptian hieroglyphics, a monkey, a scarab, an ankh, a pyramid, a lion, sphinxes and numerous other ancient Egyptian design elements.
Giovanni Battista Piranesi was an Italian Classical archaeologist, architect, and artist, famous for his etchings of Rome and of fictitious and atmospheric "prisons". He was the father of Francesco Piranesi and Laura Piranesi.

About Peter Ogden

Peter Ogden

I have been a visual artist since the 1960s. I'm originally from Orange County, New York, located in the Metro New York City region where I was raised on the working dairy farm [Ogden Farm] which my family founded in 1832. I graduated from Bucknell University where I majored in art which included a semester in Florence studying Italian Renaissance art. After Bucknell I studied at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. I have lived throughout the U.S. [including three years in Sante Fe, New Mexico], in the Caribbean and in Mexico and Central America. I now reside in the 19th century...
