Description
This is a 1951 Civil Defense poster from Teanack, Bergen County, New Jersey designed by Charles Coin.
Originally believed to be from 1942, we learned in an email from the girl [now a woman who wishes to remain anonymous], who is pictured in this poster with her mother and brother that the correct year is 1951.
Civil defense or civil protection is an effort to protect the citizens of a state from military attacks and natural disasters. It uses the principles of emergency operations: prevention, mitigation, preparation, response, or emergency evacuation and recovery. Civil defense practice drills and shelter signs were very common during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The Fine Art America logo does not appear on the final product.
