Description
This is a restored copy of a 1999 architect's engineering scale mechanical drawing of the famous San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge over the San Francisco Bay that was built from 1933-1936. This drawing was done by engineer Zachary Goldman who was paid as an employee of the US Federal Government's National Park Service to create it.*
Such a toll bridge was imagined in the California Gold Rush days. Construction finally began in 1933. The bridge was designed by Charles H. Purcell and it was constructed by the American Bridge Company, The Bay Bridge opened on Thursday, November 12, 1936, six months ahead the Golden Gate Bridge opening. The Bay Bridge originally handled automobile traffic on the top deck, as trucks, buses and passenger trains used the lower deck. After the Key System discontinued rail service, the lower level was changed to accommodate all non-rail traffic as well. The bridge was unofficially dedicated to James "Sunny Jim" Rolph Jr., August 23, 1869 – June 2, 1934, in 1986.
