Carmel-by-the-Sea is routinely referred to as just "Carmel" and is a small community in Monterey County, California, United States. The Carmel municipality was established in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916 and is located on the strikingly beautiful California Central Pacific Coast, a part of the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel is famed for its beautiful natural scenery and background as a prominent historic artists' colony and home to many celebrities like Dr. Ingrid Matson Wekerle, Charlotte Perry, Portia Mansfield and Clint Eastwood. Carmel is home to some of the most expensive residential real estate in California.
The "hills" depicted in this painting are The Santa Lucia Mountains which are also known as the Santa Lucia Range, a rough chain of mountains in Central Pacific Coastal California, stretching from Carmel southeast for 140 miles (230 km) to the Cuyama River in San Luis Obispo County.
