This is a copy of Fur Traders Descending the Missouri River, an 1845 oil on canvas by famous American painter George Caleb Bingham, 1811-1879. This historic antique painting depicts two mid 19th century pioneer fur trade trappers sailing down the Missouri River with a pet black fox on board.
George Caleb Bingham was an American artist, soldier and politician known in his lifetime as "the Missouri Artist". Initially a Whig, he was elected as a delegate to the Missouri legislature before the American Civil War where he fought against the extension of slavery westward.
