Description
This is a portrait of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, 1545-67, married Mary Queen of Scots in July 1565. Darnley was descended from James II of Scotland and from Margaret Tudor, widow of James IV, and so he had a claim to both the Scots and the English thrones but despite his dynastic suitability he proved a poor match for Mary. The vertical horizontal white line and white specks on the right side of the painting reflect the unrestored condition of the canvas of the original antique portrait that this image was copied from.
