Description
This is a restored copy of a chromolithograph illustration by John R. Neill, 1877-1943, famous American illustrator of L. Frank Baum Wizard of Oz books. This fantasy illustration by Neill was first published in 1904 to illustrate a Wizard of Oz sequel titled The Marvelous Land of Oz: Being an account of the further adventures of the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman and also the experiences of the highly magnified Woggle Bug, Jack Pumpkinhead, the Animated Saw Horse and the Gump being a sequel to the Wizard of Oz.
The happenings of this sequel take place soon after the occurrences in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and following Dorothy Gale's return to the midwestern state of Kansas. The main character of the novel is an orphaned lad named Tip. As best as he can remember, Tip has lived under the stewardship of the mean Wicked Witch known as Mombi while living in the northern section of Oz known as Gillikin Country. Mombi was always very cruel and bullied Tip. As Mombi goes back to her home one day, Tip plots his revenge by scaring her with a carved wooden man he has produced, with a big Jack-o'-lantern he fashions as a head, thereby named Jack Pumpkinhead. To Tip's disappointment, Mombi is not deceived by this trick, and she uses this occasion to exhibit the new magical "Powder of Life" that she has recently procured from another witch. Mombi advises Tip that she plans to convert him into a statue of marble to discipline him for his incorrigible ways.
