This is a copy of a pen, ink and watercolor on paper illustration by English illustrator Charles Folkard, 1878-1918, for a scene from Pericles in The Childrens' Shakespeare published in 1911. In this scene a chest washes up on the shores of Ephesus with Thaisa inside. This illustration depicts a group of pirates at the seashore with a large antique treasure chest.
Pericles was a Greek politician and general during the Golden Age of Athens. He was prominent and influential in Athenian politics, particularly between the Greco-Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War, and was acclaimed by Thucydides, a contemporary historian, as "the first citizen of Athens".
