Description
This is a restored copy of The Archangel Michael Fighting the Rebel Angels, 1621. This is an engraving by Flemish engraver Lucas Vorsterman I, (Flemish, Zaltbommel 1595–1675 Antwerp) based upon a painting by Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp) . The original painting by Rubens was apparently lost long ago.
Vorsterman was born at Zaltbommel, Netherlands. Circa 1618, Vorsterman became a member of Rubens' studio. From 1619 to 1621, Vorsterman was Rubens's only engraver. Around those years, Rubens had begun a printmaking business for which he hired Vorsterman to make engravings of many of Rubens' most famed paintings.
Archangel Michael is the Prince of Angels. He is the leader of the angels in the fight against Satan and the dragon. Saint Michael is the patron saint of police, military, radiologists, sailors, military, paramedics, EMT, emergency medical technicians, firemen, people who work in dangerous conditions, security guards, and he is the protector of the Chosen People of the Old Testament. Saint Michael is also the messenger of God, the warrior of God, the angel of healing and the angel of death who protects and guides souls on their journey to heaven.
