Description
This is a restored copy of The Captive Family of the Last Siberian Khan Kuchum Before the Kremlin in Moscow, 1559, a watercolor by famed Russian painter of Russian historical scenes, Nikolay Karazin, 1842-1908.
This painting depicts the family of the last Tatar Muslim Khan of the Khanate of Sibir being lead as captives into Moscow before the Kremlin by the Russian Cossacks who captured them. Kuchum had managed to escape this raid. The grand spires of Saint Basil's Cathedral are clearly visible in the left center background.
Kuchum Khan was the last khan of the Khanate of Sibir. Kuchum Khan's efforts to promote Islam and his cross-border incursions encountered strong resistance from the Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible, who dispatched a legion of Russian Cossacks to meet Kuchum head-on. Kuchum is famed as a Tatar folk hero for the courageous resistance he and his men showed to the Russian invaders.
