Description
This is an enhanced copy of Catherine II, The Great Empress of Russia, a cast terracotta medallion (terre de Chaumont); in a gilt wood frame by Jean-Baptiste Nini (Italian, Urbino 1717–1786 Chaumont-sur-Loire) created in 1771. The Russian text on the medallion reads: "By the Grace of God, Catherine II, empress and sovereign of all Russia." The original 18th century terracotta medallion without the frame is 6 1/8 in. (15.6 cm) in diameter.
Catherine II, usually referred to as Catherine the Great, was the last ruling Empress of Russia and the empire's longest reigning female monarch. Catherine rose to power soon after the overthrow of her spouse and second cousin, Peter III.
