Description
This is a copy of "The Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, 1620", an 1869 etching and engraving on steel; proof on chine collé by the American Joseph Andrews, (American, Hingham, Massachusetts 1806–1873 Boston, Massachusetts) after the original artwork by Peter Frederick Rothermel, (American, Nescopeck, Pennsylvania 1817–1895 Linfield, Pennsylvania). The original antique engraving was printed by William M. Miller (Boston, Massachusetts) in 1869.
This illustration dramatizes the American cornerstone account of the Pilgrims, religious dissenters, who fled England on board the small wooden Mayflower sailing vessel pursuing freedom of religious belief previous to founding the Plymouth Colony in what is today known as the American state of Massachusetts.
Predicated upon Peter Frederick Rothermel’s 1854 painting, this illustration depicts the Pilgrims' military counsel, Myles Standish, as he stands upon a rocky shore, assisting his wife, Rose, in debarking from an open wooden rowboat. All of the children, women, and men in this image concur with the historical persons who fearlessly faced the dangerous, lengthy and exhausting Atlantic voyage in 1620.
Provenance: Mrs. John H. Wright.
The Fine Art America watermark does not appear on the final product.
