Description
This is the historic official seal of the City and County of San Francisco, California. This seal was designed in 1900. The man to the left of the shield is a gold miner of the mid nineteenth century California Gold Rush period. The man on the right holds a mariner's compass while the central motif inside the shield appears to be early navigational explorer's sailing ships in the Golden Gate of San Francisco Bay.
San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California. It covers an area of about 46.89 square miles (121.4 km2), mostly at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area.
