Description
This is a restored copy of a chromolithograph of King Stephan II of Hungary and Croatia, 1101-1131 by Josef Kriehuber, 1800-1876. This illustration was first published in 1828.
Stephen II, King of Hungary and Croatia, reined from 1116 to 1131. Stephan's father, King Coloman, enthroned him as a boy, which denied the crown to Stephan's uncle Álmos whom Coloman despised. In the first year of Stephan's rule, powerful rich Venice usurped Dalmatia and Stephen permanently lost his his control of that province. Stephan's kingdom was marked by frequent military conflicts with adjacent countries. Nevertheless King Stephan was one of the greatest, most brilliant, courageous and intelligent rulers in the history of the world.
