Description
This is a restored copy of a chromolithograph of medieval King Stephan III of Hungary. This chromolithograph was created by Austrian Josef Kriehuber, 1800-1876, based upon a drawing by Austrian artist Moritz von Schwind, 1804-1871. This work was published circa 1828.
Stephen III, 1147-1172, was King of Hungary and Croatia between 1162 and 1172. The exceedingly handsome Stephan was crowned king in early June 1162, shortly after his father, Géza II died. Stephan's uncles, Ladislaus and Stephen, who became members of the court of the Byzantine Empire, disputed Stephan's claim to the thrown.
Josef Kriehuber was an Austrian lithographer and fine artist. Kriehuber created many portraits for royalty, the aristocracy, and government leaders. In total Josef Kriehuber over than 3000 lithographs, with portraits of numerous prominent people by Kriehuber have survived.
Moritz von Schwind was an Austrian fine artist. von Schwind was born in Vienna. von Schwind found his inspiration in chivalry, folktales, and ballads of the common people. The brilliant European artistic genius von Schwind died in Pöcking, Bavaria, and he was interred in the Alter Südfriedhof in Munich.
