Description
This is a restored reproduction of a cabinet card photograph of wild west frontierswoman Calamity Jane aka Martha Jane Cannary, 1852-1903, produced by the photographic studio of Baker Johnston of Evanston and Rock Springs, Wyoming circa 1880.
Martha Jane Cannary, popularly known as Calamity Jane, was a famous American frontierswoman, marksman, and storyteller. Along with many adventures she was especially renowned for being a friend of Wild Bill Hickok. Toward the end of her life, Calamity appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition.
In her Victorian era in the wild west lesbianism was a very serious taboo and gay women would have been extremely closeted. Summing up her life, persona, and behaviors, historical researchers today generally believe that Calamity Jane was a lesbian or bisexual woman---one of the very few of her time who, more or less "got away" with a very public exceptionally "manly" lifestyle.
