This a a restored copy of Cat Watching Birds by a Sleeping Dog, a circa 1880 drawing and aquarelle on paper by Henriette Ronner Knip. This Victorian painting depicts a gray and white short haired domestic cat hiding under a dog house as it watches three birds feeding while a chained brown and white dog sleeps above.
Henriëtte Ronner-Knip, 1821–1909, was a Dutch-Belgian artist who painted in the Romantic style and is best known for her animal paintings; especially cats. In 1887 she was awarded the Order of Leopold and, in 1901, became a member of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Knip often exhibited with her son Alfred and daughters Alice and Emma who also became artists.
